SkiBD: CBD and Winter Sports

If 2020 was the year of staying inside and keeping our distance, then 2021 is the year of getting out and giving our bodies some exercise—while keeping our distance. For some, this sentiment may mean packing up your clubs and fitting in a tight nine. Others might prefer to go on a brisk jog every other morning. Here in Utah, however, we ski.

There are few things more exhilarating than flying down the side of a mountain strapped into two pieces of plastic (unless you snowboard, in which case I’ll amend that to one piece of plastic). Breezing through patches of powder and weaving around snowy pine trees is the perfect winter way to get exercise while enjoying the great outdoors. That is, until you slam ski first into a tree.

Like all sports, skiing and snowboarding aren’t without danger. Even if larger injuries are avoided, skiers often end the day feeling sore and exhausted. It’s a good exhaustion, but exhaustion nonetheless. Luckily, Farmer & Chemist is here to help ease the pain of a long day on the mountain. Whether you bruised your leg slipping on a patch of ice, or just can’t walk down a flight of stairs, CBD is the answer to your problems. Our products work overtime to provide winter athletes with the rest and relaxation they need for another successful day on the slopes.

What is CBD?

It’s no secret that CBD is all the rage, especially in the winter sports community. Skiers and snowboarders alike use the compound to calm swollen muscles and attain maximum relaxation. But what is CBD exactly? How does it work?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally-occurring compound extracted from cannabis plants that aids individuals with anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain—all while avoiding the hypnotic and psychoactive properties of medical marijuana. Basically, it provides the calming and pain-relieving benefits of other cannabis products, while avoiding the “high.”

If you want to learn more about CBD and how it interacts with the body, check out our previous post entitled “Let’s Talk CBD.”

Why should winter athletes use CBD?

Firstly, CBD is natural. Sure, other pain relief products might give you the relief you’re looking for, but Farmer & Chemist CBD provides that same relief with no unnatural side effects. While aspirin and acetaminophen ease how your body responds to pain, they negatively interact with your kidney and liver, respectfully.

CBD, on the other hand, gives you similar relief without compromising your body’s natural systems. It can make you feel lethargic, but lethargy can be easily avoided by discussing your dosage with one of Farmer & Chemist’s on-staff pharmacists.

CBD also keeps you alert and in the present, avoiding the psychoactive “high” of other cannabis products. This is good news for athletes, because CBD helps you attain relief while maintaining a clear head and responsive body—two absolute necessities for any physical activity.

Which products should I use?

The miraculous thing about CBD is that it works on a plethora of ailments. It doesn’t matter if you have a bruised tailbone or a bruised ego—CBD can help!

The first product I recommend to my ski buddies are the Farmer & Chemist Roll-on Gels, Hot Spot and Chill Out. These portable roll-on gels are a cheap way to attain fast and effective relief. They work in the same vein as IcyHot and other temperature-based pain relievers, in that they provide your muscles with an icy chill to numb the pain or a relaxing heat to alleviate any aches and pains. Pair this with the infused CBD and miracles occur.

If you find that the roll-on gels aren’t doing the trick, then It’s the Balm and Problem Salved are amazing alternatives. It’s the Balm is our broad-spectrum CBD infused balm that is created with beeswax and MCT oil, in addition to essential oils like lavender and eucalyptus. It provides topical pain relief in addition to basic moisturization. It’s easy to use—just scoop out enough balm to liberally cover the bothersome area. Let it sit for a few seconds and wait for the relief to flood in. It’s the Balm comes in three different sizes and concentrations: 1oz with 500mg of CBD, 1oz with 1,000mg of CBD, or 2oz with 2,000mg of CBD.

If It’s the Balm still isn’t enough, or if you had a rough day on the mountain and just need some extra kick, look no further than Problem Salved. Our anti-inflammatory CBD-infused salve simultaneously moisturizes your skin and fights off inflamed joins and sore muscles, so it’s the perfect warrior against ski-based injuries. It’s a bit more concentrated than the balm, with 1920mg of CBD in the 1oz package. Furthermore, Problem Salved also features 0.3% THC, purely to aid in absorption and effectiveness. Pairing CBD with this minimal amount of THC helps cannabinoids bind to your body more effectively, increasing the amount of relief you feel. Don’t worry, it’s a minimal enough amount that it is both legal and non-psychoactive.

Wind chapped face? No big deal!

Bruised limbs and bruised egos aren’t the only risks when flying down the mountain—there’s also that pesky wind. I don’t know about you, but even when I’m rocking a neck buff or balaclava, the wind still works its way through the fabric and onto my face. And there is nothing worse than wind burn!

Thankfully, Farmer & Chemist has you covered. Look no further than Youth Boost, our CBD-infused face mask that hydrates and heals your wind-chapped face in a snap. All you need to do is remove the mask from the stylish packaging, place it on your face, and let it set for twenty to thirty minutes. While you’re waiting, take some time to massage your sore muscles, eat a snack, or just zen out. Then remove the mask and gently massage the remaining serum into your face and neck. These cellulose face masks will leave you and your face feeling as shiny and new as a freshly groomed blue run.

Try It and Ski

As an avid skier myself, I can’t celebrate Farmer & Chemist CBD enough. It works wonders on inflamed and sore muscles, in addition to providing me with the calm and clear mind I need to enjoy myself in the snow. Even moguls can’t mess that up.
